Mid-Century Modern Design
There
is a sense of discovery, exploration and newness in
modern interiors. One of the first incarnations of
modern style took place mid-century with nods to
space-age, future-oriented shapes and materials
Retro style, as it is now dubbed, has enjoyed a
revival and strains of it are quite evident in
modern interiors of this day. Bold, solid colour,
graphic or sculptural shapes and an emphasis on
textures that stand out on neutral supportive
backgrounds are indicative of this style.
Modern Innovation
Modern
style plays with perspective, takes on the expected
and changes it. In a way, modern style seems to know
the rules and to choose to thoughtfully break them.
Upholstery with an over-size pattern or traditional
wall-paper in unusual colour-ways are examples of
this rule-breaking.
Modern style can also incorporate the old in new ways.
For example, reclaimed materials, exposed brick
structural beams and industrial metals. This style finds
a beauty in the utilitarian and the manmade. Man-made
elements are evident not only in the industrial but also
in the use of plastics, lacquered cabinets, polished
concrete. In addition, modern spaces often incorporate
abstract art or found objects as art.

Space-Planning
Another
aspect of modern style is a minimalism that extends
to space-planning. Whether by preference or
necessity, modern spaces are often small or unusual
(in converted industrial buildings etc.). Clever use
of space becomes essential. Open plans require
inventiveness in order to create living areas out of
one, larger space. Vertical space becomes precious.
A
second aspect of this economy of space is economy of
stuff. Modern spaces are uncluttered. Lines tend to
be spare and clean, draperies minimal, furniture
tailored and materials sleek. This fact does not
mean that modern interiors cannot be quite formal.
There is, in fact, a sense of discipline to
spareness that gives a formal feel.
Global Modern
Finally,
modern spaces show a knowledge of the larger world
which manifests in global influences. For example,
an antique Japanese chest among modern Italian
leather furniture. This global awareness also leads
to green building methods and an investment in decor
that is achieved in environmentally sensitive ways.
In summary, modern style interiors incorporate the new
and keep pace with societies’ changes.
