Exotic Geography
Exotic
design style, from a North American perspective,
references décor elements that have origins in Asia,
the Middle East and Africa (to present an
inexhaustive list). An European appreciation for
exotic elements grew with early explorers and the
opening of trading routes. The West discovered a
passion for chinese decorative techniques or
chinoiserie. Thus, items such as blue and white
porcelain, dark carved wood panels and lacquer were
prevalent. More recently, we’ve seen an appreciation
for the modern “bollywood” style.
Exotic Details
Rich
colours are often a feature of exotic style. Reds
and blacks are common in oriental styles and a
bright combination of pinks, oranges and golds often
exist in East
Indian styles. Diaphanous or elaborate materials,
embroidered silks and embellished sheers come into play
in the exotic style. Different countries developed and
excel in specific decor techniques.
In China,
for example,
the
technique for dying fabrics with Indigo patterns is
highly developed. The resulting textiles incorporate
many meaningful symbols. Hand woven rugs and
crewel-work cushions worked in intricate designs and
patterns reflect the cultures that create them.
Distinct mediterranean Shapes include arches and
keyholes, in furniture, doorways and windows.
Exotic Influences
Ancient
cultural influences come into play in the exotic
style. Sculpture and art can reference religious
icons. The Zenstyle develops directly from an
appreciation for Eastern religion and Feng Shui is
now commonly applied to modern spaces. The object is
a serene space that allows harmony and flow,
encouraging positive outcomes. This style can
therefore exhibit an uncluttered spareness, calming
horizontals, minimal furnishings and a symbolic
connection to nature.
Exotic
Range
With
the internet offering more and more options for
globalcommunication, the interchange between
countries increasesand access to decor elements from
around the world is quite possible. In addition, as
more and more people move from their homelands and
make new homes in other countries, global awareness
increases. Therefore, one might find a zen oasis in
the middle of a bustling city or a Turkish style
ranch house in a Texas field.
Exotic style is rich with cultural references and lends
character to the rooms it adorns.
